Frequently Asked Questions About Tissue Donation



Q. How do I register to become a tissue donor?
A. Tell your family your wishes, and join the donor registry. Your nearest driver's license office can also help you. Remember that your driver's license is a legal document of your wishes, but it is still important to be sure your family is aware of those wishes.

Q. What tissues are needed for donation?
A. Tissues such as skin, bones, eyes, tendons and heart valves are among the tissues most often used, but new advances in technology and surgical procedures continue to add to this list. One tissue donor can enhance the life of more than 50 patient recipients.

Q. What will my family think about my decision to donate tissue?
A. Families who decide to donate often find that it helps them through their grieving process. They receive great comfort from being able to have something positive come from the death of a loved one.

Q. Can anyone register to donate tissue?
A. Yes. Anyone can join the tissue donor registry.

Q. Who will receive my tissues?
A. Tissue transplants are given to people who urgently need them. As many as 50 people may be impacted by the tissues recovered from just one donor. 85% of tissue recovered and processed by Northwest Tissue Services will be used to help patients in this geographic area.

Q. Can I change my mind after registering?
A. Yes. Simply tell your nearest relative or legal guardian and have your driver's license changed at the nearest driver's license office.

Q. Is there any cost if I decide to become a tissue donor?
A. No. There is absolutely no cost to you or your family if you become a tissue donor.

Q. Can I limit the tissues I donate?
A. Yes. Simply write in which tissues and organs you wish to donate on the registration form. Click here to register.

Q. Can people under the age of 18 register to be donors?
A. In Washington, the minimum age is 15 1/2 but your custodial parent or legal guardian must sign as a witness on the registration form and give consent at the time of death. If you are at least 15 1/2 click here to register.

Q. Will tissue donation affect funeral arrangements?
A. No. Recovery of tissues will not interfere with customary funeral arrangements. All arrangements for tissue recovery are coordinated by a Tissue Services coordinator to avoid interference with hospital routines and to minimize inconvenience.
