Her years of supervising 11 employees at a Spokane insurance company honed Shanna's ability to motivate a diverse staff of people. When she started working for Puget Sound Blood Center in 2001, she just needed to learn about a very different kind of business.
She did just that during a year as a courier, and then expanded her knowledge base with two years in the distribution unit of the Blood Center's Northwest Tissue Services. She later acquired strong inventory management skills working for a Minnesota bicycle parts distributor.
After 18 months, she decided to go back to college in the Seattle area. She earned a BS in business administration from Central Washington University by taking classes at the Lynnwood campus while working full-time at Tissue Services as a senior product services consultant, taking orders, and tracking down answers to questions.
Now, as the supervisor, Shanna does that and more, assisting physicians in ordering and making sure that their questions are answered by the appropriate personnel, scheduling staff, and solving account problems.
"We may be a 'behind-the-scenes' operation," she says, "but that doesn't lessen the importance of our work. We deal with hospital staff daily and we make sure they get what they order for their patients. That's as important as it gets."
