Enhancing Lives through Transplantation

Debbi S. Soderberg

Recovery and Processing Supervisor

Debbi's background has prepared her for the busy times that Northwest Tissue Services is currently experiencing. She was an Army operating room technician for four years, another 13 years in the Army Reserves, and also at Virginia Mason Medical Center.

At Tissue Services, her supervisory position marks a natural progression from tech I, II, III, and 10 years as lead processing tech. Now she oversees 15 such positions, plus all aspects of processing and recovery at the Renton facility and the Spokane satellite office. While her responsibilities have grown, so has her enthusiasm.

"The work is interesting, never routine, and always evolving," Debbi says. "I love the challenges. That's why I've stayed 19 years." And despite the changes that have transpired over time, she sees a similarity between Northwest Tissue Services' early days and its current operations.

"It was all brand new for me back then," she remembers. "We were a start-up tissue bank and I was an entry-level technologist. In a way, it's all new again: I just became a supervisor and we're now internationally-known and experiencing record levels of tissue donations and distributions."

Debbi thinks recent successes owe much to character traits that have always defined Tissue Services staff. "We are a flexible, yet tenacious group," she says. "We always rise to the occasion."
